Like most Internet users, you probably use reviews to evaluate restaurants, products, service providers, and companies you’re thinking about working at. Be careful, though: nearly any review system is open to manipulation – both by companies buying fake reviews so they can look better online, and by cyber criminals trying to trick would-be customers into visiting scam and malicious websites. The Federal Trade Commission recently released new rules designed to stop these practices by banning the sale or purchase of fake reviews, consumer testimonials, celebrity testimonials, social media indicators generated by a bot or hijacked account, and so on. This rule is intended to clean up online review systems to make them more trustworthy and less open to manipulation – but now and in the future, always be careful about whose opinion you trust, and where you click because they told you to. It only takes one wrong click for you to end up playing into the hands of cybercriminals – and once that happens, no amount of one-star reviews is going to solve the problem.
