A new topic for us today as we take a look at education and training in the legal industry, in particular, how we can improve it for our next generation of lawyers.   I’ve trained and mentored many law grads and junior lawyers so I have my own ideas about how we can change the education system so we can better prepare our colleagues for the future of the industry. Some of the skills that I see are really lacking are those practical skills – communication, project management and business type skills that are so essential.  Jessie Porteous is a Sydney based in-house lawyer and founder of start up The Learned Crew. TLC is a legal training business that aims to prepare the next generation of lawyers for the real world of law by bridging the gap between the legal theory taught at law school and the practical skills required by lawyers.  Here’s a summary of the things we talk about:  An intro to The Learned Crew – preparing the next generation of lawyers by bridging the gap between the legal theory taught at law school and the practical skills required in the profession Identification of a training gap in in house roles The mismatch between the theory taught in law school and practical skills needed in practice The need for skills that go beyond typical legal skills TLC’s in-house legal clerkship New opportunities for law graduates New learning methods, including using a simulated environment The importance of project management skills The innovation drive has hit in-house Jessie’s advice for law students – “say yes to every opportunity” Links  * The Learned Crew website * Connect with Jessie on LinkedIn * Subscribe to Doing Law Differently on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or Spotify   * Discover how I can help you escape the billable hour, eliminate the grunt work and do more of the work you love with productised services * Connect with me on LinkedIn  * Are you keen to share how you’re Doing Law Differently? Get in touch here.
