Welcome Graham fam! We are so glad you could watch Sunday morning online with us. Sermon: The Coming of a King – God’s Original Intent Introduction: * Easter is approaching; we celebrate our risen King. * Series focus: The Coming of a King and God’s original intent. * Human sin often involves perverting God’s good intentions. Scripture: * 1 Samuel 8:1-9 (Israel Requests a King) * 1 Samuel 8:10-22 (Samuel Warns against a Kingdom) Points: * God always intended for Israel to have a King: * Israel’s desire for a king wasn’t wrong, but it was premature. * God intended for Israel to be a spiritual kingdom first. * 1 Peter 2:9-10: We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood. * The people wanted a king like the other nations: * Israel wanted a king to be like other nations, missing God’s greater plan. * Isaiah 55:8-9: God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours. * Israel’s desire for a king led them to miss out on God’s full potential for them. * God was supposed to be their King: * Only God could be the holy and righteous king for Israel. * Exodus 19:4-6: Israel was meant to be God’s special treasure and holy nation. * 1 Samuel 8:7-8: Israel’s request for a king was a rejection of God. * What the people wanted would cost them: * Israel’s desire for a king would lead to significant sacrifices. * 1 Samuel 8:20: The people wanted a king to judge and lead them into battle. * God’s warnings about the cost of a king were ignored by the people. Closing: * God is the King we follow and the Kingdom we belong to. * Israel’s impatience led them away from God’s original intent. * Don’t follow people; follow God and wait on Him.
