Caroline Shaw came from a violin-centric household — her mom was a violin teacher, her older brothers played violin — and so every Wednesday from age six to eighteen she took lessons. She even attended Rice University's prestigious Shepard School of Music to earn her bachelors in violin performance. But after college, Caroline took a left turn and embarked on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to spend a year alone wandering Europe studying Renaissance landscape gardens.  It was during this time abroad when Caroline began writing her first sting quartets and started to discover her own compositional voice.
