Giving Kids an Emotional Toolkit | POF165

Parenting Our Future - Podcast tekijän mukaan Robbin McManne

Emotional intelligence is more and more important, especially in parenting, especially in today’s day and age. EI, or EQ, for short, or SEL, social emotional learning, means: the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. It’s critical to teach our kids to develop their EQ…BUT it’s tricky because chances are we were never taught how to manage our own! GOOD NEWS, it’s NEVER too late to grow and develop it. In fact, having kids provides a great opportunity to both learn and teach emotional intelligence. My guest, Nadine Levitt, is an expert in teaching how to understand your child’s emotions and your own. The result is kids who feel safe, heard, supported and trust their parents. When your child feels this way, not only are they able to manage their emotions, you have a better relationship with them and parenting has less friction. In this episode we talk about: emotions, how we break it down for kids so that it is both simple and empowering. How emotions come and we can’t control themHow to look at what our emotions are telling usEmotions come to us in clusters, how can we direct them?As parents, we can either be influenced by our kids' emotions OR we can be an influence so when your child has big feelings, accept that emotions are here and notice (without judgement) what you are saying to yourself about them.
