We’re constantly inundated with marketing strategies and recommendations from other business professionals. I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to follow them—especially if they’re not working for your business. As a business owner, you’ve likely been told that content is the end all be all for marketing and you have to blog if you want to succeed, but for some businesses that isn’t the case. Today, I’m debunking the myth that you have to blog, or show up on social media, or do all the things to be a successful business owner. Track Your Marketing to Ensure It’s Working for You Let me tell you about one of my Brand Strategy School students who was raising 2 littles under the age of 7 while working full-time. While she desperately wanted to spend more time with her kids, she also wanted to grow her business. After looking through her business and marketing strategy, we found that she was stuck in a bottleneck with her time. She was spending time creating content for her blog, yet she hated doing it. So why was she doing it? She was listening to other business owners say that this was the only way for her to bring in consistent clients. We looked through her data, where we found that zero of her clients found her through her blog, which meant she’d been wasting all of that time. This didn’t work for her business. So she put the blog on the backburner. Whatever it is that you’re doing in your business that isn’t generating the results you need, put it on the backburner. Where to Focus Your Time Instead If blogging, or social media, or whatever platform it is you’re spending too much time on isn’t working for you, refocus your time and energy elsewhere. You can do this by looking for short-term and long-term lead generators that will work for you without adding more time to your plate. When you do this, you’re putting your efforts in places that will actually generate revenue and serve your business better. Now, do I think blogging is bad? No, but I think that many well-intending marketers encourage you to follow a one-size fits all strategy without exploring why something may not be working for your brand because of your audience.
