Our phones and technology are not inherently bad. However, they can be a huge distraction and start to take over our lives in ways we don’t even realize. Is your phone (and all of the notifications that are constantly beeping) running your life? Today we’re breaking down 5 ways your phone is impacting your life and…what to do about it. It’s time for you to answer for yourself: is it time for a digital detox. Let’s take this summer to reclaim your life from your phone! 5 Ways Your Phone is Impacting Your Life Your phone is likely impacting your sleep. If you use your phone within 1-2 hours before bed, it can be detrimental to your sleep quality. The blue light emitted by screens suppresses melatonin production, making it harder for you to fall asleep. Moreover, engaging in death scrolling, where you continuously scroll through your phone until you fall asleep, can prevent you from winding down mentally. It’s time to take back your sleep! Try to avoid using your phone two hours before bed and one hour after you wake up. Secondly, your phone can impact your presence with others. If you're always on your phone and distracted by notifications, you may not be fully present in conversations with family, friends, and colleagues. Try turning off notifications for everything except essential communication tools like text messages or use the "Do Not Disturb" mode when in important discussions. Thirdly, your phone can impact your productivity. The constant beeping and buzzing of notifications can disrupt your flow and take your attention away from deep work, making it harder to focus. Planning for periods of time where you don't check your phone can help, and it's essential to train your brain to avoid distractions. Fourthly, using your phone for extended periods can impact your physical health, leading to poor posture, neck pain, and eye strain. To avoid this, it's recommended to do most of your work on your computer, rather than your phone. When you do use your phone, be purposeful and limit the time spent on social media. Lastly, our phones can impact our creativity. Whenever we have a spare moment, such as waiting at the doctor's office or in line, we tend to reach for our phones. However, this eliminates the opportunity for space, quiet, and creativity. Instead, try to wait in silence, look around, talk to people around you, bring a book, or just sit and be present.
