This episode is all about Dogen and poetry. Roshi Enkyo O’Hara, Abbott of The Village Zendo in New York, talks about Dogen as a poet. She reads poetry that Dogen likely read and recited as a three year old child, and discusses Dogen’s very early relationship with language that expresses the obscure, the difficult, and the melancholic. Enkyo reads and analyzes one of Dogen’s poems about his deceased mother and father, and discusses Dogen’s relationship with his mother, Ishi, who encouraged him to study great literature and become a monk.
