Sensei Fugan Eugene Bush and Marilyn Whitney continue Upaya’s series on Zen liturgy and ritual with a talk on the practice of sewing Buddha’s robes. Both Eugene and Marilyn teach the traditional practice of sewing robes, and here they discuss the meanings of the practice and its origins in the sangha of the historical Buddha. This is an excellent talk to listen to if you’re considering receiving the precepts and sewing a rakusu or ordaining as a priest and sewing an okesa. And for those who aren’t particularly interested in sewing, Marilyn and Eugene talk about how we can cultivate the same presence of mind that we do in sewing through other tactile practices of slowness and precision.
