His work fuses elements of realism and the fantastic and typically features isolated protagonists facing bizarre or surrealistic predicaments and incomprehensible socio-bureaucratic powers. He never married, yet had a tortured relationship with sex and was womanizer who was engaged several times. Although the term "Kafka-esque" has entered the English language to describe situations like those found in his writing, he was virtually unknown during his lifetime.
